Bamboo harvest season
6D5N YUKKURI 2 COUNTRYSIDE RETREAT
in Fujieda, Shizuoka
10 to 15 Apr 2026
(Women-only)
Hi you!
Thank you for your interest in Yukkuri Countryside Retreat: Bamboo Harvest Edition 2026.
Yukkuri is a special travel project birthed by my love for the countryside life when living with Shiori, my Japanese sister. The retreat is named by her eldest daughter, Maholo-chan.
ゆっくり (yukkuri) means “to be slow and at ease”. Maho-chan was one year old when we spent a summer together in 2023. She would often, out of the blue, speak words that sounded like “yukkuri” and we’d laugh, because this little guru knew we needed her nagging to slow down and be present.
Come yukkuri with us 🎋
This is a really special project for me, Shiori, and our growing community of Japanese friends in Shizuoka. The first Yukkuri retreat was in the spring of 2025, Sakura Edition. It started out with Shiori as my partner in crime. We also had Sumie-chan as our lovely support. As Yukkuri 1 Retreat unfolded, more women connected and now we have a network of locals who are looking forward to meeting you! (Scroll down to see them!)
For Yukkuri 2 Retreat, our itinerary this season involves late-spring activities such as harvesting your own bamboo shoot and a bamboo-weaving workshop! We will also be visiting places and attending events that are mostly only accessible to the locals living in Shizuoka. ✨ I can’t express how grateful I am to our Japanese friends for welcoming us so warmly into their community. ✨
This is not your usual yoga retreat; we’ll be living this retreat like a Japanese local, rather than attending (: Things may not go according to plans, but that’s the charm of a countryside, go-with-the-flow, slow travel.
Please feel a full-hearted yes! before signing up. This retreat is birthed and will be co-created through the pure kindness of kindred souls (that includes you, if you’re joining us!) to share a slice of simple slow days together. It will be sweet if everyone’s hearts are aligned.
My retreat intention is to create a cosy gathering of kind women who are ready to slow down ゆっくり, feel safe together, and are open to see contentment in simple, everyday ordinary things. We don’t need a lot to be happy, really 💛

To be sure that everyone feels welcome and at ease, here are a few things that you must be comfortable with, if you’re joining us:
- This is a small retreat of six participants only.
- We’re living together in one house sharing communal spaces like a family.
- There will be toddlers joining us for some activities, children of my Japanese friends who are hosting us for events and meals.
- We are living in a traditional house that belongs to a native local of Shizuoka. We may be visiting other locals’ homes/spaces too. It’s so special to be invited to anyone’s home, so let’s clean up after ourselves well and respect these spaces. May we be agreeable on this.
- Please be open to go with the flow. Everything is thoughtfully and thoroughly planned ahead but as with life, things don’t always go as we want. Life in the countryside is beautifully fluid, let’s drop into the flow~
- You will receive my full itinerary only 1-2 months before the retreat. From past experience, I know that businesses here operate at their own timing guided by the changing seasons and I want to respect that—so if you must know our schedule down to a tee, this retreat may not be for you.
- We are staying in a traditional 100 years old Japanese house, not a hotel. The owner rebuilt it by hand and it’s already fully booked till May 2026 (it’s highly loved!) He saved us a week for the bamboo harvest season retreat. The rooms are aesthetically pleasing, calm vibes with modern amenities such as daily fresh towels, hairdryer, heaters in each room and one toilet & bathroom to share. It’s a gorgeous space.
- We will be sleeping on plush, high quality futons on tatami mat. There is no bed frame. This is your traditional Japanese sleeping arrangement with premium quality beddings.
- There is also no clear separation of “my space, your space”. The 3 bedrooms are separated by sliding shoji, bamboo & paper walls. Think Ghibli-style homes.
- Because of the layout of the house, for some room to access the toilet easy, it will be great to keep our bedroom doors ajar, sharing a harmonious space together like the locals do. The whole compound is ours with a spacious living room, kitchen, shared bath and toilet, our own private garden and patio.
- We must be okay with sharing just one toilet & bathroom. Chances are we may have two~! I will update you.
- I will be your designated driver. I will rent a car. It will be like a family trip!
💗 This retreat mirrors how my life was, living with Shiori and her family during summer in 2023, weeks of winter and spring in 2024, and spring in 2025. We will be living this retreat, rather than just attending—if this makes sense and is your cup of travel tea, join us!
Meet the lovely women of Yukkuri

🌼 Shiori! 🌼
I met Shiori in New Zealand, 2017. She was working on an AirBnB in Takaka, Golden Bay, and I was a solo backpacker who booked a bunk bed. We became friends over our shared love for drinking warm water in summer (very Asian), practising yoga in the AirBnB garden, hitchhiking for the fun of it, and cycling to chase the full moon!
In 2018, she visited Singapore. In 2019, we hosted a Mums & Kids Yoga Retreat in Chiang Mai together, with Shiori as the arts & craft teacher. And now, Yukkuri projects!
During Yukkuri Retreat 2025, Shiori was pregnant with Hou-chan, her second child. You will be meeting the baby on behalf of our Yukkuri alumni, who met Shiori in her 3rd trimester! And Maholo-chan, her adorable first born. Shiori is core-support for this retreat, and she’ll be also hosting a local craft workshop.

💐Sumie-chan! 💐
Sumie-chan is Shiori’s friend, and I was introduced to work at her vegan cafe Aima in Fujieda, Shizuoka. Living in the mountains in a caravan, waking up to magical walk to her cafe, learning how to roast coffee beans and make samosas in the kitchen with Sumie-chan—this was when I fell in love with living in Shizuoka!
Aima the cafe is now closed as she takes care of her baby, but Sumie continues to sell chai at pop-up events. She was in her first trimester when I was working for her. At Yukkuri 2025 retreat, as Sumie was cooking up a storm for us, she piggybacked baby Mitsuki on a sling bustling around the kitchen!
We may enjoy a delightful vegan home-cooked meal by Sumie-chan as we join in the chopping of freshly harvested veggies.

🌺Misaki san! 🌺
Misaki-san is a new friend made from Yukkuri Countryside Retreat 2025. Her restaurant comes highly recommended and so we made a reservation for an 8-course traditional Japanese dinner.
We had so much fun and yummy food at her restaurant! Seven women in a private dining room—we were unhinged and free. Our chat topics probably needed censorship! Misaki san welcomed our vibrancy with so much pure joy, as I apologised profusely 😂
She surprised us by showing up at our closing day temple yoga that we welcomed locals to walk in. After the retreat, she invited me to a pizza date at her favourite secret lunch spot. We may visit it together in Yukkuri 2 and have a fireside chat about love, relationships, and moving life from city to countryside (we’re still finalising details, not a confirmed activity).
Where will we stay
Traditional Japanese house accommodation
A 100-year-old house in Tamatori, a charming village in Shizuoka prefecture. The owners renovated the house with their own hands, honouring the original structure and vibe.
“So you can feel time going back to the old Japanese period,” Daisuke shared.
There are 2 big living rooms for lounging in, 3 bedrooms (twin-share), kitchen, 1 toilet, 1 bathroom and an outdoor patio. And free wifi. The house also has a small charming garden. The floor is all tatami. Beside the house is a small fresh water river which during summer children play in it.
As this house is in the countryside, we are very close with nature. There may be insects such as huntsman spiders in the house, they are harmless. Please be certain that you are okay with this.

Kitchen space

Wash basin

The kitchen has a fridge, stove, rice cooker, microwave, simple oven and filter coffee maker.

One shared bathroom with shower and hot bath. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap and towels are provided. Hot bath with natural spring water in the tub is encouraged.

Cute, clean and modern toilet, even better than some hotels I’ve stayed in!

Since this is a traditional house, there is no insulated wall like hotels do. Our visit is during the bamboo-harvest season, so temperature is around 25 degree celsius. There are 4 heaters, one for each room, should you need the extra warmth.
Retreat activities for us!
Bamboo harvesting experience
Seasonal activity (unique to 2026 retreat)
We will harvest one bamboo shoot each. You can choose to have it cooked during the retreat. We will learn from the bamboo farmer on about bamboos, how to harvest them, as we explore the inside of a bamboo forest. Long pants, clothes that you are comfortable to work in and sports/trek shoes are advised as dress code.
Bamboo weaving workshop
Weave a bamboo ring by hand. The bamboo we use for the ring is from the same forest that we harvest our shoots. This activity will be conducted from the comforts of our home.
Bamboo forest walk
Takes 1.5 to 2 hours, the path is on proper well-paved concrete road and the view is scenic, at times slightly steep. Regular sports shoes or trekking sandals are fine. There is no map for this except a photo album with 8-9 photos of landmarks of the trekking route. Very fun!
Woodwork workshop OR
Ceramic workshop
(TBC: studios are now closed till March 2026 and we do not have their re-opening date yet)
We may either be making your own chopsticks under the professional guidance of skilled craftsman or our own ceramic matcha bowl by wheel-throwing method in a local ceramic center.
Shiori’s local craft workshop &
Shiori’s healing art therapy
Shiori is an arts and craft teacher for kids, and provides art therapy to parents. She may host either a fabric dye or beeswax product making workshop. This will be followed by a short and sweet, yet deeply insightful art therapy session. She is inviting us into her traditional house for these two activities.
More activities:
1) Mount Fuji lookout point/yoga
3) Visit a local craft market in a temple
4) Green tea ceremony (in Japanese)
5) Onsen at my favourite spot!
